Headgear (Helmet):
 
required if under 18 years old, passenger and/or operator

Registration Number Size:
 
No longer needed on side of cowling, numbers are on registration sticker-BLUE for 2008-2009 year.

Accidents:
 
must be reported by quickest means possible to law enforcement authority closest to scene, if bodily injury is involved. -- if property damage estimated at $1,000 or more, must be reported within 72 hours

ATV:
 
ATVs modified with snow lags/traction systems may ride on snowmobile trails if it is registered as a snowmobile.

Open water:
 
may not ride on any inland body of water that is free of ice and/or snow. If snowmobile is submerged or partially submerged, owner must remove/retrieve within 24 hours (Fine $1000).

Noise level:
 
if snowmobile built after 2/1/75, not to exceed 78 decibels at 50 feet on the A scale

Lights:
 
front must cast a beam 100ft. directly in front of the sled
Rear lamp must display a red light visible 100ft. rear of the sled


Landowner Liability:
 
none if used by others for recreational purposes. Pass at your own risk.

Abuse of Property:
 
if intentionally cause damage, such as, but not limited to destroying a fence, leaving a gate open, destroying or trampling trees or crops-you are liable to landowner in civil court law.

Insurance:
 
as of yet, Maine does not require mandatory liability insurance coverage on snowmobiles. Be smart-protect your assets-accidents don't make appointments to happen. We encourage liability insurance for all snowmobile enthusiasts.

Operating under Influence of Drugs or intoxicating liquor:
 
1.) Person 21 years of age or older, having .08% or more by weight of alcohol in that person's blood.
2.) For a person less than 21 years of age, having any amount of alcohol in the blood.

Minimum Age to Cross a Public Way:
 
14 years old

Minimum Age to Operate a Snowmobile, not accompanied by an adult:
 
10 years old* (Cannot cross a public way)
